JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT:

1. 2006-2007 Season
At the beginning of the season it was deemed infeasible to set up a clubs league, but more likely that a schools league could be started. It was hoped that Clubs could arrange matches between each other when and if they got the number of players required (some clubs were averaging less than a teams worth to training).

Schools League – a trial league started up in the autumn term, the intention being that other schools may join in the new year to form a more established schools league, the winner of which would go through to the National Schools Championships. Teething problems were transporting children (thanks to the government’s enhanced safety laws re booster seats), some teams being uncommunicative and over age children playing (the league was supposed to be U11’s but teams with slightly older children were permitted).
The 2007 league saw all teams opting for getting all games played in one morning in the form of a mini tournament. This was not what was intended for the schools. The league was devised so that schools could play each other in after school time, meaning teachers didn’t have to give up any more weekends than they had to. However, transport issues being as they are this seems the most popular way forward now.
Inter Area and National Championships Competitions – Uptake was poor for this. For Inter Area the main initial reason is that there are no team managers or team coaches appointed. The team is cobbled together over email by the Junior Development Officer. For National Championships the factors for teams are either lack of players (clubs) or it being a long way to travel and a long day for both the adults and the children.
Korfball Kidz – This event came out of a meeting where the need for matches was highlighted. From miscommunication it became a mixture of providing matches and providing a skills session. One in Cambridge at CRC was very successful with good numbers. The later one in Littleport was unsupported by Vikings and not advertised well in the area The uptake was poor, though the session was felt to be successful. It needs to be decided whether people want to see purely matches or more of the same before next season.
Inter Club Matches – Some clubs have been more proactive than others at arranging fixtures. Very few inter-club matches have been played.
Equipment – The equipment owned by the CKA has been numbered and inventoried (excluding 2 x 3.5m posts supposedly at Hills Road). This needs to be updated as numbered posts from National Youth Day will not have been returned to the same venues. There are some spare posts at Perse Boys to be shared out. Morley School (new project for City) and Milton Road will need more equipment in September. It would be good to have equipment for other schools too. Best equipment for schools is collapsible posts to adapt for different ages and for transport / storage.
Club Uptake – All clubs bar Phoenix (who are interested in making a start) are currently running a junior section with mixed results. City is the only club targeting pre-schoolers to 7years age group. Clubs continue to be encouraged to make links with schools to aid their recruitment. Regular competition is needed but this is difficult without good numbers in a single age group.

National Youth Day – This was a great success. The venue was good apart from the parking situation. There were plenty of team entries from Cambridge which satisfies the BKA. Tapes were borrowed from NKA – many pegs were returned to them which had not been returned from the previous NYD at Sawston. A taster session run by Peter Teague was well received by locals and stimulated interest by people to start up a club at the school.

2. Action for 2007-2008 Season
Inter-Area Competition – If possible one manager and one coach (from separate CKA clubs) will be appointed for each age group – U11, U13, U16 and U19. U9 did not run this year and I am not sure if it will run next year.
National Championships – More teams will be encouraged to enter this. I will try to get Cambridge to host some of these and inter area fixtures to aid the transport / time away issue.
Club League – Clubs are failing to be proactive and make regular, albeit creative, fixtures with each other. Though it is clear that most clubs still do not have enough players in one age group to fill a team, the need for children to play games for their club is paramount. Some sort of league needs to be constructed for next season giving the children the chance to play for or with their club. Whether this is a) a match day once a month where children turn up and get put into teams (as closely as possible aligned with their club mates) or where they play for their team but there is flexibility with age groups or b) clubs play each other with age flexible teams on pre arranged days set by the fixtures officer on a formal league basis. This needs to be discussed and agreed by clubs.
Schools League – A schools league will run over the whole school year. Unless schools have any objections I intend to run it via the mini tournament format (but will organise a few) as people have obviously found this most workable.
Funding – More posts are needed for further development. We have a real need though for funding for coaching in schools. The main problem here is actually getting someone who can coach in school (assuming Lee has a finite number of hours he can put in). Any suggestions as to a korfball coach available for hire during the day would be welcomed. Perhaps one avenue would be to approach the City Council.
CKA Junior Tournaments – In light of not running NYD next season, I plan to run 2 junior tournaments. 1 x small regional tournament to include CKA and NKA in September or October. 1 x larger tournament to be the “CKA Junior Tournament” as in previous years to be held in April.

REFEREEING:

Nothing to report.

COACHING:

Level 1 coaching course not cost effective with present numbers and required hall time.

Level 2 coaching course will be held in Kent next year over 3 weekends.

PUBLICITY:

Things I've done :-

- Korfball clubs training details put on various sports/Cambridgeshire websites.

- BBC radio interviews set-up. Adam to take part in interview this coming Monday.

- Poster designed fro National Youth Day and for future korfball events.

Others things I can't take credit for :-

- Write-ups in Cambridge Evening News

- Write-ups in the BKA magazine

CPO:

There has been some headway with clubs getting disclosure checks done but this obviously needs to build in momentum with an aim to have all coaches, refs and CPOs checked ASAP. Other than that, we now have most risk assessments for the different venues played in, and for outdoor tournaments. Overall it's moving in the right direction, but is still very slow !
